Frequently Asked Questions

When are medicals undertaken?

Usually on a Monday or Friday mornings

Where are medicals done?

In the offices of Pilot Flight Training, a flying school at London Oxford airport (the London bit is confusing, the airport is in reality just Oxford airport). Postcode OX5 1RA, a map of the area is here.

How do I find your office?

My office is in Pilot Flight Training (PFT), a flying school located under the control tower at Oxford Airport.

  • I suggest that you consider arriving 10–20 minutes early.

  • Access to the building with my office is through the door under the canopy opposite the Aviation Station Café.

  • Two PFT receptions exist: one by the main entrance and one further inside. The reception by the front door is usually but not always manned. The main offices are round the corridor to the left. If you are uncertain where to go, just ask at the post room right in front of the main entrance, they are very helpful.

How do I organise a medical?

Fill in the contact form on the home or the ‘Get in Touch’ page.

How long before the medical should I make an appointment?

As long as possible. Not infrequently medicals are available at short notice, so always do ask if you need a short notice medical, however, equally, often slots are full for the following 4-6 weeks. It is definitely best to book as early as possible, and if your flying rota etc does not give you clarity as to whether you will have the time off, best to book, be clear that you may need to move the slot, and we can re-organise more easily once you have a slot.

Do I need to do anything before my appointment if I’ve had a medical before?

Yes. Log into your CAA online medical account (Cellma), enter your past year’s medical data, and pay the CAA fee (about £10 for Class 2, £16 for Class 1 and 3). Please note if you don’t already have a cellma account, you must apply asap, as it takes up to 10 days for the CAA to authorise this, see here for official advice from the aeromedical section of the CAA.

What eye checks are required for commercial licence holders (Class 1 & 3)?

  • Every 5 years if prescription is between +3D to +5D or -3D to -6D, or if astigmatism/anisometropia is 2D–3D.

  • Every 2 years if worse than -6D or +5D, or if astigmatism/anisometropia is over 3D.

  • Whenever clinically indicated.
    If unsure, please ask.

Do I need to bring a urine sample?

No, don’t bring one, this will be done during the medical — it is best to arrive with a comfortably full bladder for this. Do let me know at the start of the medical or even earlier, when you arrive if you need to go and the test can be done then.

What is the mental health checklist?

Class 1 and 3 applicants should print the checklist, complete their section, and bring it to the medical. The address to find the mental health checklist is:

What medical documents should I bring if I’ve been unwell?

Bring all relevant documents from your GP or hospital. These are available free of charge under data protection legislation, but often hospitals take a while to respond. If you need letters, often the consultants secretary is the best point of contact. Phone them initially, be their friend, subsequent communication should usually be by email.

I am new to the CAA system. What should I do?

  1. Create a CAA account online: CAA Portal (allow up to 10 days for approval).

  2. Once approved, log back in, complete the medical application form, and pay the CAA their fee (£10 for Class 2, £16 for Class 1 and 3).
Bring your CAA number with you — without it, the medical cannot proceed.

Do I need to bring my glasses or contact lenses?

Yes. Bring your latest prescription and ask your optician to complete the attached eye test form. If you usually wear contact lenses, please wear glasses to the appointment instead. The address to download the form for your optician is:

I am a class 2 initial applicant, should I let you know about serious medical issues in advance?

Yes, please do so. I cannot access your online application beforehand, so email me about any serious conditions beforehand, or ongoing medication use. Bring all relevant hospital or GP letters as I do not have access to any hospital or GP records.
